This webinar honestly felt a touch insulting. I understand that this is a scholarly look at my generation with the intended audience being older generations that are teaching iGen students, but nevertheless the tone makes it sound like the speaker has a completely negative opinion of us. While some statistics I could understand and completely relate to, I often felt as though the speaker thought of us as a lesser generation. Granted, it was supposed to be a webinar regarding the social and educational changes of students through recent generations and isn’t intended to cover the entirety of generational changes.
Hi, Matt,
I can understand your feelings here, and I agree that some suggestions were insulting to your ability to engage intellectually. I’m glad you are also acknowledging that this is a limited look at this research. As we discussed in class, sometimes there is a tendency for older generations to be less open to change. Perhaps we can all relate to the nostalgia we may feel to situations that were comfortable and that we could understand. I appreciate your willingness to surface your feelings and to channel them into a question. Although I don’t think our question was addressed (probably due to time restraints), I hope that the speaker was able to see the questions and will consider the point. Thanks for your contribution to the wider conversation as well as to our classroom!
